We’ve all taken photos where our faces look unusual or moody. Your facial expressions just did not play out the way you thought they would.

It’s beyond doubt that your face and its expressions can ruin much awaited sessions with your photographer.

Luckily, we have thoughtfully curated some tips to make your face look more photogenic and ensure you slay at your next photo session.

Without further ado, let’s dive in to discuss these tips.

Tip 1: Use a good light source or better still, natural lighting.

Nothing beats beautiful light rays from the sun.

A portrait’s worst nightmare is shadows. It’s not entirely true, however but when it comes to taking nice pictures, it is essential that your face is properly lit (not too little, not too much).

Before taking a picture, make sure the main source of light is right in front of you.

While ring lights give everyone access to professional lighting, natural lighting from outside or simply standing in front of a window could just be the difference you need.

Tip 2: Always point your camera down.

This tip is helpful when you are in the mood for selfies or when you ask a friend to take an image of you.

Ensure to tell them to put the camera at a low angle as this gives you a humbled look and would not only help to slim down your face but also your entire body, if it’s in the photo.

Talk about a complete makeover!

Tip 3: Find your best position or angle.

All fingers, they say, are not equal and majority of the people on earth certainly were not born with the same face.

Some positions and angles don’t flatter your face when captured. The angle that best suits you can be different from the one that suits another person.

To find your best angle and position, try taking selfies of both the left and right side of your face, then compare them.

Get clear on which side you like best and remember to angle your face rather than look straight into the camera.

Tip 4: Grab some paper.

Taking pictures in the brutal, sunny weather can be discouraging because of harsh shadows that will appear in your picture. This can be an artistic style but you might want to leave it to the professionals.

If you just want that soft, dreamy and flattering look, grab a sheet of paper to bounce light to your face and decrease any form of shadows that might make you look like you have a double chin (definitely not what we are trying to achieve).

Tip 5. Smile with your eyes.

What does it mean to “smile with your eyes”’ ?

Tyra Banks, the host of America’s Next Top Model always gave this tip. She consistently motivated participants to smile with their eyes (smize).

It may sound strange but it can boost your expression and make it come off as more natural and real instead of looking forced.

The big question now is; How do you smile with your eyes?

We shall learn more of this in our next blog post
